CAGE SHARK DIVING
ADVENTURE. ADRENALINE. FUN
JOURNAL
Cage shark diving was one of my FAVOURITE activities I’ve done in my life and should be on everyone’s bucket list. Not only because it’s a thrilling adventure but also because you learn a lot about those MAGNIFICENT often misjudged creatures. Many companies offer a pickup and drop off option if you don’t have your own transport so shop around. The adventure starts early in the morning, you meet up at about 7AM at the dive centre and have a breakfast. After everyone arrives, they brief you on the day, you put the wetsuit on and off you go to the boat. Bear in mind, there are many boats around, you won’t be the only group heading out to see the sharks. Short trip out to the open ocean, you arrive at the potential spot and WAIT. We waited for about an hour for GREAT WHITES and sadly they didn’t turn up. We headed to a different location to dive with brownies instead – smaller sharks. The crew dropped down the cage, threw the bait into the blue and the first sharks turned up. A group of four people entered the cage with the diving masks on. The crew member holds out the bait on a rod and lures the shark closer to the bars so you can see it up close. When the shark is close enough – the other crew member shouts ”GO DOWN; DOWN!!”, you take a deep breath and put your head under the surface. The adrenaline is pumping!. There’s no words to describe your first encounter, the cage vibrates when the shark hits it with its tail. You realise quickly how POWERFUL those creatures are! Incredible experience. You get to enter the cage twice if you want. After everyone had their turn, you head back to the dive centre for a short lunch followed by a viewing of a video from the day. You can purchase the video on a memory stick for a small fee.
TIPS
- don't forget your bikini/ boardshorts and a waterproof camera
- it can be quite choppy on the water so consider the seasickness pills
- THE MOST IMPORTANT TIP - bring a shower gel and a towel, they have showers there, and trust me, your hair will be covered in fish guts, you'll want to rinse it out haha
