ELEPHANT SANDS
ADVENTURE. NATURE. WILDLIFE
JOURNAL
Elephant Sands in Nata was one of my favourite experiences from the whole of Africa journey. It’s basically a campsite placed around the waterhole where elephants come to drink water. To get to the campsite you drive through a small town Nata, and then enter a sandy road – deep fine sand we’re talking here. A bit motorbike unfriendly 😉 with 4×4 you’d have no problem though. It’s best to make an adventure out of your stay there rather than a sleepover so arrive as early as you can. We arrived at the campsite at about 4pm and all the best camping spots were already taken by 4x4s with the rooftop tents. We were the only people with a tent on the GROUND which didn’t boost our confidence. You see the elephants drinking from the waterhole at any time of the day and night. You watch them come and go, and fight for the best drinking spots. They have a massive fire pit and and a restaurant there, so grab a BEER sit by the fire and watch those MASSIVE wild animals. We were sipping our drinks until almost midnight mesmerised by the elephants. Eventually we went to sleep. This was the BEST part. The elephants roam freely around the campsite in between the tents at night! At one point I woke up because of the noises and saw Max sitting upright staring through the tent. Turned out that a HUGE elephant was right two meters from our bed looking at us! We were SCARED that it wouldn’t see our tent and STAMP on us… so maybe we didn’t get much sleep that night, but it was certainly the most thrilling one!
TIPS
- brace for a fesh fesh road, a motorbike will be a bit more challenging than 4x4
- arrive as early as you can to get the best spot on the campsite
- these animals are wild and if provoked can be dangerous, follow the safety rules and respect the elephants
